There was a flurry of press trying to divine meaning from Senate Majority Leader Malcolm Smith' comments at the Human Rights Campaign event on Saturday evening. Some read this as a message to gay rights advocates that the marriage bill - which has passed the Assembly and has support from Gov. David Paterson, but was previously held up by the GOP-controlled Senate - would not pass this year, which spurred a bit of angry react from advocates, who raised significant cash and campaigned to help Smith wrest the majority from the GOP in November.
