The CBS News/New York Times poll found that 42 percent of Americans believe same-sex couples should have the rights and responsibilities of marriage. Last month a CBS/Times poll found support at 33 percent. The new poll is the highest support for the freedom to marry since CBS news began asking public opinion in 2004 the network said on Tuesday.
