Voice for Equality: Tammy Baldwin

U.S. Representative Tammy Baldwin (D-WI) was elected to Congress in 1998 - the first woman to serve in the House of Representatives from Wisconsin. She was re-elected to her sixth term in 2008. In the 111th Congress, Tammy serves on the Committee on Energy and Commerce, its Subcommittee on Health and its Subcommittee on Energy and Environment. She also sits on the Judiciary Committee and its Subcommittee on the Constitution, Civil Rights, and Civil Liberties.

She is a leading advocate for universal health care and a proponent of energy independence and renewable fuels. Tammy is also a forceful supporter of civil rights and an advocate for those in our society whose voices, too often, are not heard.

On her website she states, "I believe in full marriage equality for gays and lesbians. Our constitutional system - the checks and balances between the three co-equal branches of government - was created to ensure the protection of minority rights, and throughout history many groups of individuals have sought such protections from their government. Today, people who want the protections of marriage laws for their same sex partnerships are petitioning their government."

Freedom to Marry thanks Lesley Jones for nominating Congresswoman Tammy Baldwin as a Voice for Equality!
