Whenever a politician changes direction on a hot issue, there is the inevitable question of why it took so long, and whether the wait was because the politician feared a voter backlash. Suffolk Legislator Jon Cooper (D-Lloyd Harbor), said that, generally speaking, growing public support for marriage equality has made it easier for some politicians to change their position. “If there wasn't a feeling that the water is safe, there's a number of legislators who wouldn't feel comfortable doing what their heart dictates," Cooper said Sunday.
