4) Second Annual Sweet Equality – October 23rd in Des Moines, Iowa:

Announcing the second annual Sweet Equality, a celebration of marriage equality and delectable desserts. On Oct. 23 from 5:30-8 p.m. at the Teachout Building (E. 5th and Locust Street) in Des Moines, professional chefs, local celebrities and businesses will come together to show off their skills in the name of Equality.

The annual dessert competition features professional chefs and local celebrities facing off for the coveted “Sweetest Thing” and “Best Presentation” awards. Awards are given in both the professional and amateur celebrity baking categories. Winners in the professional category are decided by public vote and a panel comprised of local media personalities will judge the amateur celebrity category.

Announced competitors include local celebrities such as Lt. Governor Patty Judge, Maddy Maxwell, Spouse of Drake University President David Maxwell, and Iowa State Fair blue ribbon award winner Eileen Gannon. Judges panel will be comprised of local media personalities including KGGO’s “The Round Guy”.

The event also features local wines, beer and martini sampling, music and more! Tickets for Sweet Equality are $35 and can be purchased online at oneiowa.org, at the door, or by calling Amanda at 515-288-4019 ext. 214.

This competition was created to raise awareness of businesses and individuals who support equality in Iowa. With this April’s historic Supreme Court decision in favor of the freedom to marry, Iowa is starting to see the economic advantages of equality. A recent Williams Institute study estimated $160 million in new spending on weddings and tourism in the State over three years.

All proceeds from this event will go to One Iowa Education Fund, a 501 (c) (3) organization. All donations to Sweet Equality are tax deductible.
