Allen Kerr points out that "once you wade through all the emotional arguments of the gay marriage debate, there's also at its heart a matter of simple practicality... there are currently more than 1,100 federal rights which are bestowed upon married heterosexual couples -- rights most of us take for granted, but which are denied to couples who happen to belong to the same sex."
