Voice for Equality: Harvey Fierstein

Harvey Fierstein is an American actor and playwright, noted for the early (1982) distinction of winning Tony Awards for both writing and playing the lead role in his long-running play, Torch Song Trilogy, about a gay transvestite-performer and his quest for true love and family. He has since effectively become an unofficial, ubiquitous celebrity spokesperson and champion for gay civil rights. Other notable Broadway projects to which Mr. Fierstein has been attached as a writer or performer include: La Cage Aux Folles, Hairspray, Fiddler on the Roof and A Catered Affair. Film appearances include: Torch Song Trilogy, Bullets Over Broadway, Mrs. Doubtfire, Death to Smoochy, Garbo Talks and Independence Day. Learn more here.

Harvey Fierstein is a proud signer of Freedom to Marry's Marriage Resolution which reads:

Because marriage is a basic human right and an individual choice,
RESOLVED, the State should not interfere with same-gender couples who choose to marry and share fully and equally in the rights, responsibilities, and commitment of civil marriage.
