Voice for Equality: NYS Senator, Eric Adams

On November 7, 2006, following a distinguished 22-year career in the New York City Police Department, Eric L. Adams traded his blue uniform for a blue suit when the residents of the 20th Senatorial District elected him to the New York State Senate. He was re-elected in 2008, receiving votes as a Democrat and as a member of the Working Families Party. Senator Adams represents the neighborhoods of Boro Park, Crown Heights, Flatbush, Park Slope, Prospect Heights, Sunset Park, and Windsor Terrace. Learn more here.

On December 2, 2009, Senator Eric Adams was one of twenty-four senators who voted in favor of the Marriage Equality Bill on the Floor of the NYS Senate Chamber, and he was one of several senators who spoke personally and powerfully in support of the freedom to marry during the pre-vote debate. His challenge of Sen. Diaz's listing of states that had passed legislation banning the freedom to marry by listing states that once supported slavery and racial inequality, and his assertion that one's personal religious beliefs should have no place in legislative decisions, both made a strong case for marriage equality. See video of his speech below:
