Voice for Equality: Syracuse Mayor-Elect, Stephanie Miner

Stephanie Miner is an attorney, Democratic politician, and Mayor-elect of Syracuse. She defeated Republican Steve Kimatian, 50%–39%, in the November 2009 general election, and will become the city's first female leader. Miner began her political career in 2001, when she was elected to the Syracuse Common Council. She was re-elected in 2005. Learn more here.

In its 2009 General Election Voter Guide, the Empire State Pride Agenda wrote:
A longtime supporter of LGBT equality, Stephanie Miner was the original sponsor of a resolution to raise the rainbow flag during Pride celebrations at Syracuse City Hall. She will be the first Mayor of Syracuse to support marriage equality and joins the ranks of many other large city New York state mayors who have pledged to work toward equality and justice for all LGBT New Yorkers. Her victory proves once again, as Freedom to Marry's Evan Wolfson has pointed out numerous times, that supporting the freedom to marry for gay couples does not harm officials being elected in mayoral races, just as it has not harmed any state legislator who has ever voted in support of marriage equality and run for re-election.

Freedom to Marry welcomes Stephanie Miner as a strong upstate New York Voice for Equality! Learn about other Voices for Equality here.
