New Maine Marriage Polling Numbers

Daily Kos
September 30, 2009

Jesse Connolly, the campaign manager for No on 1/Protect Maine Equality writes,
"A new public poll from Democracy Corps was released yesterday, showing us with a slight lead this race 50% to 41%, a significant jump from kos's numbers from the other week of 46-48.

The numbers are encouraging, but it's that 9% undecided that will determine this race. The investment of our supporters has allowed us to get on TV before our opponents and counter every lie they have tossed at us.

Tonight at midnight is the end of the third quarter and all of you know what that means: we will need to turn in our fundraising report.

Our campaign will be judged on the strength or weakness of this report." (Link)

Donate by midnight tonight to help the campaign reach its goal of 50,000.

Voice for Equality: David Hoffman

David Hoffman served as Chicago's Inspector General from October, 2005 until August, 2009, when he resigned from his Inspector General post to run for the U.S. Senate seat currently held by Roland Burris. He joined a thin field of Democratic candidates pursuing the seat including Illinois Treasurer Alexi Giannoulias and Chicago Urban League President Cheryle Jackson. The likely GOP candidate will be Mark Kirk. To learn more [Link]

On September 21, 2009, Hoffman's office issued the following statement in support of marriage equality to the Chicago Tribune:

David Hoffman does not believe the government should intrude or discriminate on the question of who people decide to marry and spend the rest of their lives together. It's an issue of equality and fundamental fairness and all people -- regardless of sexual orientation -- should be provided the same protection under the law.

David also supports the Respect for Marriage Act bill to repeal DOMA. As a matter of constitutional law, a contract entered into in one state should be honored by all states. Just as the sanctity of opposite sex marriages in a state are honored by other states, so should the marriages of same sex couples. Without this protection, opposite sex couples can file a joint tax form and receive a tax benefit. Under present law, same sex couples can't. That's wrong. It's discrimination. And the bill to repeal the law should be adopted by congress and signed into law by President Obama, who supports the measure. [Link]

Voice for Equality: Oregon Congressman Earl Blumenauer

Earl Blumenauer is an American politician and lawyer from the state of Oregon. A native of Portland, he spent over 20 years as a public official representing the city before winning election to the United States House of Representatives in 1996. A Democrat, he represents Oregon's 3rd congressional district which includes most of Portland east of the Willamette River.

In conjunction with the introduction of the Respect for Marriage Act (RMA) by Rep. Jerrold Nadler on September 15, 2009, Rep. Earl Blumenauer wrote a piece on the Huffington Post opening with the line, "On July 12, 1996, I cast the worst vote of my political career," - referring to his vote for the so-called "Defense of Marriage Act." Among his other comments in the piece:

I long ago recognized and acknowledged the mistake I made, and I have spent time understanding the problems in my thinking and analysis. It has resulted in frank and important conversations with many gay and lesbian friends, and if anything it has strengthened my commitment to the cause of banning discrimination based on sexual orientation and has made me a better lawmaker. Voice for Equality: Bob Barr

Robert Laurence "Bob" Barr, Jr is a former federal prosecutor and a former member of the United States House of Representatives. He represented Georgia's 7th congressional district as a Republican from 1995 to 2003. He was the Libertarian Party nominee for President of the United States in the 2008 election. Barr attained national prominence as one of the leaders of the impeachment of President Bill Clinton, but he became even more famous in the LGBT community by authoring and sponsoring the 1996 so-called "Defense of Marriage Act," which prohibited the federal government from honoring the marriages of same-sex couples.

In 2006, after joining the Libertarian Party and serving on its national committee, Mr. Barr's public statements on marriage equality began to change. At the 2008 Libertarian national convention, Mr. Barr pledged to work to repeal DOMA:

Later, on September 15, 2009, Bob Barr issued the following statement at the introduction of the Respect for Marriage Act by Rep. Jerrold Nadler. Agreeing with his old adversary, Bill Clinton, he stated:

“I join with former President Bill Clinton in commending Rep. Jerry Nadler for introducing the ‘Respect for Marriage Act of 2009.’ This legislation would strengthen the principle that each state is free to set the definition of marriage the citizens of that state have adopted. Rep. Nadler’s legislation would also repeal the 1996 Defense of Marriage Act, and by so doing, remove the federal government from involving itself in matters of defining ‘marriage,’ which historically and according to principles of federalism, are properly state matters and not federal.” [Link]

On April 23, 2009, Brendon Ayanbadejo wrote a piece on The Huffington Post in support of marriage equality. Among his comments:

If Britney Spears can party it up in Vegas with one of her boys and go get married on a whim and annul her marriage the next day, why can't a loving same sex couple tie the knot? How could our society grant more rights to a heterosexual one night stand wedding in Vegas than a gay couple that has been together for 3, 5, 10 years of true love? The divorce rate in America is currently 50%. I am willing to bet that marriages between same sex couples have a higher success rate than heterosexual marriages. [Link]

Once again, instead of having an honest debate about how to treat all Maine families fairly, the opposition wants to scare Maine voters about schools - this time by using a re-cycled Proposition 8 ad. No on 1/Protect Maine Equality says:
Maine voters deserve the facts. Let me be clear: Maine 's marriage equality law has nothing to do with public schools and marriage is not taught in Maine schools.
Enough is enough. We need your help to stop these lies. Their goal is to confuse and distract voters. We need to make sure that Maine voters know the facts-- but to do that we need another $18,583 by midnight so we can get our response ad on the air.
We need your help to fight back. Can you dig deep and make a contribution to help us refute this misleading new ad?

Voice for Equality: Rev. Gene Robinson

V. Gene Robinson is the ninth bishop of the Diocese of New Hampshire in the Episcopal Church in the Unisted States of America. Robinson was elected bishop in 2003 and entered office in March 2004. Before becoming bishop, he served as assistant to the retiring New Hampshire bishop.

Robinson is widely known for being the first openly gay, non-celibate priest to be ordained a bishop in a major Christian denomination. His sexual orientation was privately acknowledged in the 1970s, when he studied in seminary, was ordained, married, and started a family. He went public with his sexual identity and divorced in the 1980s. When delegates to the Episcopal convention were voting on the ratification of his election, it became an issue of controversy. His election was ratified 62 to 45. His story has appeared in print and film, and in April 2009, Robinson made the Out Magazine Third Annual Power 50 list of the most influential gay men and women in the USA, landing at number 7.

On June 15, 2009, Rev. Gene Robinson spoke at the LGBT Community Center in New York City, saying:
Marriage equality is taking on an air of inevitability. Even the conservatives know it's going to happen; it's just a matter of when.
About his efforts to help get marriage equality legalized in New Hamshire, Rev. Robinson said:
I testified about separating the legal right from the religious rite. We have gotten so confused in this country where the civil act and the religious act begin and end, because we have deputized the clergy to act for the state. The New Hampshire law says that no religious unit will have to perform a ceremony it doesn't want to. I think it's a strategy that's going to work in a lot more places.
